چکیده

K. Schulten Beckman Institute University of Illinois Urbana, IL 61801, USA More than ten of the most prominent models for the structure and for the activity dependent formation of orientation and ocular dominance columns in the striate cort(>x have been evaluated. We implemented those models on parallel machines, we extensively explored parameter space, and we quantitatively compared model predictions with experimental data which were recorded optically from macaque striate cortex. In our contribution we present a summary of our results to date. Briefly, we find that (i) despite apparent differences, many models are based on similar principles and, consequently, make similar predictions, (ii) certain "pattern models" as well as the developmental "correlation-based learning" models disagree with the experimental data, and (iii) of the models we have investigated, "competitive Hebbian" models and the recent model of Swindale provide the best match with experimental data.

A Comparison between a Neural Network Model for the Formation of Brain Maps and Experimental Data

G.G. Blasdel Harvard Medical School Harvard University Boston, MA 02115 Recently, high resolution images of the simultaneous representation of orientation preference, orientation selectivity and ocular dominance have been obtained for large areas in monkey striate cortex by optical imaging [1-3]. These data allow for the first time a "local" as well as "global" description of the spatial patter...

Ocular dominance columns in cat striate cortex and effects of monocular deprivation: a 2-deoxyglucose study.

Ocular dominance columns were demonstrated in the visual cortex of kittens by [3H]-2-deoxyglucose autoradiography after monocular stimulation with patterns of different orientations. On horizontal sections through area 17, a pattern of periodic labelling extended throughout the entire thickness of the cortex. Three days of monocular deprivation disrupted that pattern. The ocular dominance colum...

Models of orientation and ocular dominance columns in the visual cortex: a critical comparison

Orientation and ocular dominance maps in the primary visual cortex of mammals are among the most thoroughly investigated of the patterns in the cerebral cortex. A considerable amount of work has been dedicated to unraveling both their detailed structure and the neural mechanisms that underlie their formation and development. Many schemes have been proposed, some of which are in competition. Som...

Effect of early monocular enucleation upon ocular dominance columns and cytochrome oxidase activity in monkey and human visual cortex.

We examined cytochrome oxidase (CO) activity in striate cortex of four macaque monkeys after monocular enucleation at ages 1, 1, 5, and 12 weeks. These animal experiments were performed to guide our interpretation of CO patterns in occipital lobe specimens obtained from two children who died several years after monocular enucleation during infancy for tumor. In the macaques, the ocular dominanc...

Geometry of orientation and ocular dominance columns in monkey striate cortex.

In addition to showing that ocular dominance is organized in slabs and that orientation preferences are organized in linear sequences likely to reflect slabs, Hubel and Wiesel (1974a) discussed the intriguing possibility that slabs of orientation might intersect slabs of ocular dominance at some consistent angle. Advances in optical imaging now make it possible to test this possibility directly...
